Animal Cruelty in America
Iowa has
what I would call an “Un-American” Law they are trying to pass called the “Ag-Gag”
Bill. In essence, this bill passed last
month in the Iowa Senate makes it illegal for anyone to conduct investigative
reporting or scrutiny on their own to expose the abuse and cruelty inflicted on
farm animals. I, along with animal
lovers everywhere, agree that this bill will only further animal abuse. The 2012 general government Appropriations
Bill has a clause for funding horse meat inspections by USDA, making room for
horse slaughter which is opposed by 80 percent of Americans. This Bill was added in December, 2011, at the
final moments and is said to have been approved by electronic signature because
the President was out of the country and not approving this Bill would have
held up the assembly proceedings. Bills
like these are being voted on daily without very much mainstream media
attention, thereby, leaving the Americans virtually “in the dark” until after
the bills have been passed.
I am highly
opposed to any type of animal cruelty. I
love all animals and feel they deserve the same respect any other living
creature deserves. I don’t believe in
testing make-up or cosmetics on animals.
Animals are a joy and become like members of the family. There should not be any dog fighting or
chicken fighting.
If Americans
would join together and oppose this cruelty to all animals, maybe we could make
a difference. We need to voice our
opinions and our love for our animals to show that Americans do not agree with
the mistreatment of animals. I know
there are “black markets” where animals are traded across country lines and
that will be harder to stop but for Bills to be passed here in our own country
allowing the mistreatment/cruelty of animals is horrible! We need to find more humane ways of dealing
with misplaced animals and talk with breeders so as to find better ways of
dealing than legalized slaughter.
In an
interview with Allen Warren of the Horse Harbor Foundation in
Silverdale, Washington, he states that horse slaughter has never been actually
illegal in the US but a 2007 court ruling made it illegal for horse meat
packers to pay USDA. Another site I
read was Borderless News and Views - an article by Ernest Dempsey called
‘Un-American’ Laws Rising on American Soil. This is a site dedicated to getting attention
from people on possible laws that the media has neglected to inform anyone
about. I would urge everyone to visit
this website and look over the information it has regarding animal cruelty and
horse slaughter.
Animals are
not able to communicate with us and we need to be their voice. Animal owners need to be sure to keep their
animals healthy and have your animals spayed or neutered. There doesn’t need to be animals without
homes or owners loose on the streets. We
need to take responsibility and keep the number of homeless animals down. If everyone would work together, we could
make a large impact on animal cruelty.
There should be animal welfare policies in effect to prevent any type of
cruelty to all animals. We don’t need to
be passing bills to illegally slaughter animals. We need to be teaching people how to properly
care for their animals. From the Inaugural Address by John F. Kennedy on
page 197, he says “We observe today not a victory of party, but a celebration
of freedom- symbolizing an end, as well as a beginning- signifying renewal, as
well as change.” This goes along with how we need to change peoples minds and
views on animal cruelty. In the Letter from Birmingham City Jail, by Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. on page 181, it says “T.S. Elliott has said that there
is no greater treason than to do the right deed for the wrong reason.”
